CAN Gauge — live OBD2 dashboard with a Waveshare USB-CAN-A
Hayri's Python curses dashboard reads RPM, speed, coolant temperature and throttle off the CAN bus through a Waveshare USB-CAN-A, with DTC read and clear.
What it takes
- Software only
- Purchase required
Difficulty 1 of 3 — easy.
Details
A Waveshare USB-CAN-A on the console's USB port, an OBD2 cable to the car (a Chrysler 300C in the video) and a Python 3 script built on pyserial with a parser for the Waveshare frame format. It talks CAN directly, which Hayri found faster than serial adapters, draws a curses dashboard (the guide runs it in a fullscreen xterm at 16 pt) and, after the first post, gained diagnostic trouble code reading and clearing. Codiator points at PyOBD as the off-the-shelf alternative with graphs; Hayri prefers direct CAN access and plans a small PCB or hub adapter to tidy the dongle away.
