Snoozer94's method uses parts most Pi owners have lying about: an SMA bulkhead pigtail on the u.FL connector, pushed out through the slit already in the case and secured with a hex nut on the inside, plus an optional right-angle SMA adapter so the whip folds flat for carrying. The case is untouched and the change reverts in minutes; there are no before/after numbers in the thread.
Replies add variations — 9a4db's metal holder that gives the antenna a ground plane, ENG101's hot-glued antenna, Greg_E's epoxy putty — and Greg_E later confirmed an external antenna cured his directional Wi-Fi at 20 ft.

One line in config.txt switches a CM4 from its on-module PCB antenna to the u.FL connector the uConsole's antenna is actually plugged into.
Swap the stock foil antenna for a u.FL-to-RP-SMA pigtail, a small dual-band whip and a printed mount, with three years of measurements behind the choice.
