Mmoon's thread asked about ALFA adapters for signal and monitor mode, and the answers were consistent. The Realtek RTL8812AU cards (AWUS036ACS, AWUS036ACH) were recognised but would not scan, needing the out-of-tree aircrack-ng driver and kernel build directories that were missing; barry99705 pointed at the morrownr USB-WiFi short list and MediaTek chipsets such as the AWUS036ACM's, which he confirms support monitor mode with far better Linux support, and Rex notes his images ship kernel headers for anything that needs compiling.
wtsh later found a cheap AliExpress MT7921 dongle (the thread title says MT7821) that uses the same driver as the HackerGadgets AC1200 card; Wander_Menezes ran one for a while on Trixie and reports it works well. All of this is plug-in on the USB-A port — internal installs are a separate job.
